Abstract Watercolour Exploration

You will need:

  • Watercolour paper/journal
  • Watercolour paints
  • Brushes - different sizes and shapes
  • Water cups
  • Palette
  • Paper towels or a rag for blotting
  • Masking tape (optional - for creating defined edges)
  • Pencil (optional)

Do:

  • Choose some colours you'd like to work with.
  • Try complementary or contrasting colours for more vibrancy.
  • Wet the paper with clean water to give the colours a means to blend.
  • Apply broad strokes, dotting, or patches of chosen colours on the paper.
  • Allow the colours to blend.
  • Allow the piece to dry fully.

You could try:

  • Sprinkling salt to wet paint and letting it dry before brushing it off.
  • Drop water on either wet or dry paint for different effects.
  • Layer colours and blot them with a paper towel.
  • Use masking tape to get defined edges or shapes. Don't remove the tape until the piece is fully dry, and pull away from the painted area when doing so.
  • Leave areas untouched to create negative space or for augmentation with other media.
  • Layer additional colours/details once the initial layer is dry. You could add fine lines, dots, or patterns using a smaller brush, pigment pen, or coloured pencil.
