- Test out new art materials.
- Do a small test patch of sets of your art materials so you can see how they look in use - coloured pencils, pens, paints, or other materials.
- Test blendability of coloured pencils, how transparent or opaque they are, etc.
- Make notes about the test swatches: lightfastness, pigment info, brand, colour name, etc.
- Test how different watercolour and gouache paints move on their own, and how they mix with each other.
- Keep example pieces of other materials such as fabrics.
- Although it works better in a box, you could certainly keep samples of magazine cut outs and such in a scrapbook.
