- An ink of some kind - India ink is one of the easier to acquire, especially in large quantities.
- Suitable substrate - mixed media paper, hotpress watercolour paper, etc.
- An appropriate brush to use with ink, small size.
- A fountain pen, dip pen, or other pen that will leave ink wet for a short time when writing.
- Writing and/or drawing instruments of choice - graphite pencils, fineliners, pigment pens, coloured pencils, etc.
- Gloves (optional) - unless you don't care to muss your hands. But bear in mind ink can stain for some time.
Do:
- Write or draw on paper with the brush/pens.
- Quickly smudge or smear the ink with your hands (water, solvents) before it dries.
- You can smudge with a brush as well.
- Make sure to do so only enough to still be able to partially read/see what you'd originally put down.
- Leave as is if you like it, or redefine with sharper lines that you let dry.
Notes:
- You could also use coloured pencils, coloured inks, or other materials to colour in parts of your creation either specifically the original drawn part or even other shapes created by the smudging.
- If you water the ink down, you can get thinner layers.
