Picture and words - art journal page

|    home

You will need:

  • sketchbook or plain notebook
  • writing materials such as pens
  • a selection of art supplies of choice - coloured pencils, watercolours, etc.
  • a selection of other materials and ephemera - photographs, magazine clippings, stickers, washi tape, lace, ribbon, etc.
  • adhesives

Do:

  • Choose a journal that's going to suit you for both writing and adding visuals.
  • Along with written entries, incorporate visual elements to enhance and complement your writings.
  • You could include sketches, doodles, diagrams, patterns, photographs, ephemera, etc. that augment the entry.
  • Consider adding drawings/etc. that reflect your writing more symbolically as well - trees to represent personal growth, for example.
  • Consider thematically organising your journal by topic. Group together dreams, challenges, goals, hopes, accomplishments, family, etc.
  • Using a form of memory mapping, use images and other items to enhance entries about your past.
  • For a more artistic or creative concentration, use your journal to explore various creative techniques and art supplies through the vehicle of watercolours, ink, splattering, doodling, stamping, or stencilling.
  • Use your journal to illustrate favourite quotations, song lyrics, etc.

Notes:

  • Consider adding interactive elements like pockets, flip-outs, or fold-outs to collect ephemera or other items suitable for the section.
