You need to decorate your walls, but you're not sure with what. Why not a story mosaic, or even one of your own life.

You will need:

  • substrates of your choosing - cardstock, mixed media paper, small canvasses
  • drawing, colouring, and writing media of choice - fineliners, pigment pens, coloured pencils, paints, etc.
  • scissors
  • adhesives
  • embroidery thread and sewing tools (optional)

Do:

  • Choose a story you enjoy or that has meaning to you, some events from your own life, or quotations/lyrics that mean something to you, etc., to serve as your theme.
  • If a story, divide it up into key or preferred moments. If your life, pick some sentimental or important moments.
  • Craft each image of your mosaic to represent the key parts of the story or your life events, by drawing, colouring, using collage, painting, or even writing things.
  • When done, arrange your items in an order you like and hang them appropriately on your will.

Notes:

  • Arrange paper works on a coloured background then frame it to help pull the pieces together cohesively.
  • Frame each piece separately and hang them in whatever arrangement you prefer. It doesn't have to be square.
  • Do the work on a coloured paper instead of white.
  • Either colour or white, you can still frame with something contrasting to provide a border around the page.
  • You can enhance your piece by sewing into the papers or canvas with embroiderly floss or yarns, even adding beads or other objects as you go.
  • If you choose to work on cardstocks or papers, you'll need to frame your pieces for hanging, even if you choose to affix them to a bigger substrate instead, you'll still need to frame that for hanging.
  • If you go with small canvasses, you might not need to. Some art supply stores sell canvasses in packs in varying sizes.
  • You can use coloured papers for a substrate - either the smaller ones you work on, or as the larger backdrop for the smaller pieces.
  • You can do this small scale and not just wall scale. In fact, you could make a journal/scrapbook of them where each page is something different you want to document.
