Cut up / Build up

|    home

(etrecissements, layering, decoupage, etc.)

You will need:

  • images to work with (magazines are easy sources)
  • multiple versions of the images (optional)
  • scissors or X-Acto knife
  • a substrate - mixed media paper, poster board, watercolour paper, etc.
  • decorative papers or other images (optional)
  • drawing and painting media of choice (optional)

Do:

  • Carefully slice pieces out of an image.
  • Choose various shapes and areas.
  • Place the image on a previously chosen substrate - plain or decorated.
  • If decorated, that will show through - if plain, you can decorate the cut out areas.
  • Using a media of choice, draw, write, or doodle into the cut out area.
  • You can choose not to decorate the areas, or use a solid colour.

Do:

  • Cut images apart and re-arrange them to create a montage.
  • Use several versions of the same image.
  • Cut out different parts.
  • Layer them so the cut outs reveal different parts of the images beneath.

Do:

  • You could cut out the same or similar parts of each image.
  • Layer them to make a reverse decoupage.
  • Create a proper-style decoupage using multiple copies of the same image and layering them.
