Coasters

|    home

You will need:

  • old book covers/pages
  • scissors, X-Acto knife
  • adhesive - acrylic gel medium, Mod Podge
  • sealant - polyurethane
  • paint, pens, pencils, markers (optional)
  • backing - cork, tile

Do:

  • Cut coaster shapes to desired size.
  • Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the backing and apply cut pieces of book pages/covers.
  • Do the above slowly from one side to the other, so that you can decrease the chance of creasing, folds, and bubbles.
  • Gently run a stiff item, like a credit card, over the surface to finalise the smoothing out and remove any bubbles or folds.
  • Wait until this layer has dried completely.
  • Add decoration if desired, by drawing, painting, or adding additional cut or handwritten text.
  • Wait until these additions of dried completely.
  • Apply another thin layer of acrylic medium over the entire coaster to seal in and protect any decorations.
  • Apply a sealant over the top surface to make the item foodsafe, heat-protected, and waterproof.
  • Allow the entire piece to dry.

Notes:

  • This method could be used to create fridge magnets as well, or puzzle pieces. Just use the appropriate backing for each.
  • A set of these created from someone's favourite books could be a nice gift or stocking stuffer.
